Oh Comely magazine finds new home
18 March 2016: Independent publishing company, Iceberg Press, announces today it has purchased Oh Comely magazine from Adeline Media
Launched in the spring of 2010 by four friends from their bedrooms, the bi-monthly, Oh Comely, was a pioneer in the new wave of indie mags to hit British newsstands and now has a brand reach of over 105K. It occupies a unique position in the magazine market, offering a genuinely alternative read for creative young women.
Iceberg Press will publish Oh Comely from Issue 30 (on sale 14 April), alongside monthly sister title, The Simple Things magazine, which has shown over 40% growth since it was taken on by Iceberg from Future plc in July 2014.
Co-founder and Managing Director, David Parker, says: “We’ve proved with The Simple Things that good magazines can still thrive and grow and we believe there’s a real opportunity to bring Oh Comely to a wider audience.”
Des Tan, co-founder of Adeline Media, says: “It's been a wonderful six years. I've woken up in the morning happy to know that we have a readership who appreciate what we try to create, which is a magazine grounded in love as well as knowledge. I woke up today happy to know that Iceberg Press will be setting the inspiration bar even higher and taking the magazine's positive message to even more new, amazing people. Oh Comely is going to a good home.”
Former Editor of lifestyle craft title Mollie Makes, Lara Watson, has been appointed Editor from Issue 31. Lisa Sykes, co-founder and Editorial Director of Iceberg Press says: “It’s a rare thing to have the chance to publish a truly original magazine. The intelligent mix of personal stories, portraits and pictures, presented in its distinctive pared-back art book style, delivers an emotional, thoughtful magazine that can make you both laugh and cry.”
For prospective commercial partners, Oh Comely offers a great opportunity to target young, creative consumers who are prepared to spend on products and experiences that they love. With an audience reach beyond that of many more established magazines, Oh Comely offers brands the chance to tell their own stories to a hard-to-reach demographic within a sympathetic, tactile and beautifully-designed environment.
Iceberg co-founder and Commercial Director, Guy Foreman, says; “Taking on Oh Comely is hugely exciting for us – it is at the forefront of a renaissance in good and interesting magazines. Positive audience interaction with brands through print remains stronger than through any other channel, and for the Oh Comely reader, buying the magazine is like being part of a secret club.
“There’s a large community of creative young women that remain largely ignored and uncatered for by most titles on the modern newsstand. I’m looking forward to introducing relevant partner brands into this conversation.”
Co-founders Des Tan and Liz Ann Bennett began Oh Comely, along with co-editor Rosanna Durham, after leaving Oxford University, impressing the newstrade with its promise of an unknown girl on the cover, a place to meet strangers and a chance to look at life afresh. It has built up a loyal fan-base of subscribers and online followers and regularly hosts sell-out reader events.
Iceberg Press is proudly independent and puts the reader at the heart of everything it does. David Parker says: “The world of magazines has never been more vibrant and innovative, but you would not know it from the average newsstand today. We aim to bridge that gap. To bring the best of the spirit of the independent publishing scene to a wider audience using the skills and knowledge we gained working for some of the world's biggest publishing companies. Put simply, we believe in print.”
